Activating a segment: missions, notifications and automations
Creating a segment changes nothing for your customers until you link it to one of your program mechanics. That link is what turns a list into a personalized experience: the mission only shows to the right people, the notification only goes out to the customers concerned, the journey starts at the right moment.
Targeting a mission
Once your segments are created, link them to your missions: the mission then only shows to the customers in the segment. No one else sees it.
This is the mechanism that lets you build progressive mission journeys, where each action moves the customer into a segment that unlocks the next mission. Here are three journeys you can reproduce.
Content creation journey
Instagram followers — the customer follows your account, then you offer them the chance to share your latest post.
Engaged on social media — they share a story, then you invite them to publish a post or a reel.
Active creators — you open up the video review and unboxing missions to them.
The benefit: premium customer content, reusable in advertising, earned step by step instead of asking for everything up front.
Multi-platform review journey
Customers who leave reviews — the customer leaves a review on your site, then you offer them a Google review.
Confirmed reviewers — you offer them a Trustpilot review, then a video review.
The benefit: social proof maximized per customer, across several platforms.
Top customers journey
Top ambassadors — the customer has completed at least 5 missions.
Premium missions — you reserve the video review, the unboxing and the exclusive content for them.
The benefit: value concentrated on your most active customers.
Targeting a push notification
Link a segment to a push notification: it only goes out to the customers concerned. Each audience then gets the message that will bring it back, instead of one single message sent to your whole base.
The segment | The notification | The intended result |
Top customers | Reserved perks: exclusive rewards, early access | A status customers can feel — and customers who buy more |
Silver and Gold tiers | Early access to the next collection | Reward status with exclusivity |
Customers in a given city | Discover our new store | Drive footfall from the relevant customers |
Customers who have just lost their status | You are close to getting your tier back | Catch the customer while their status still matters to them |
Triggering an automation
Create an automation and choose the "Enters the segment" trigger: the journey starts on its own as soon as a customer meets the segment conditions. No manual follow-up, no export to schedule.
Moving a customer up a level
The trigger — entering the "Customers who leave reviews" segment: the customer has just completed a review mission.
The action — an automatic CRM event that sends an invitation to the "video review" mission.
The result — the right message at the right moment, every time, with no manual follow-up.
Handling two cases in the same journey
An automation can also split the customers of a single segment according to an extra criterion, using a conditional branch. Starting from a segment of at-risk customers, a branch on the points balance lets you handle two situations differently: those with few points get a discount voucher along with a CRM event, the others get points and a push notification.
💡 The conditional branch belongs to the automation, not to the segment. The segment defines who enters the journey; the automation then decides what happens to each customer.
Summary
Mechanic | What the segment does | Where to link it |
Mission | The mission only shows to the customers in the segment | In the mission settings |
Push notification | The notification only goes out to the customers in the segment | In the notification settings |
Automation | The journey starts when a customer enters the segment | In the automation trigger |
