Offer products when another product is purchase

Written by Farah Bahoui

Introduction

In this article you will learn how to create and set up a Buy X Get Y reward.

This reward lets your customers try new items at no extra cost and enriches their shopping experience with you.

Why activate this reward?

"Buy X, get Y" promotions are a widely used method to attract new customers to your products and reward loyal ones.

What are the benefits?

  • More sales: by encouraging customers to buy more in order to get a free or discounted product, you boost short-term sales.

  • Customer loyalty: this type of promotion rewards regular customers and encourages them to come back and buy again.

  • Higher AOV: by pushing customers to buy a certain number of items to unlock the bonus, you increase the average basket.

Creating the reward

Go to Rewards → list. Clicking Create a reward gives you access to the library of all rewards, including the Buy X Get Y one.

Setting up the reward

Once you have selected the reward, click Validate. You can then set it up.

⚠️ This reward is built on Shopify Discount Functions: it requires the Shopify integration and is not available on PrestaShop or on POS-only stores.

The customer buys product X, or a product from collection X.

  • Search for your collection or your product

  1. Search for your product

  2. Or create a custom set in Shopify with all your products, which you will then find under "your collection".

  • From

Minimum product quantity: enter the minimum quantity your customer has to buy to qualify for the offer.

or

Minimum purchase amount: with this reward, the minimum basket amount can now apply to the whole order, and no longer to a single product as was previously the case.

🌟 Difference with the "offer a product" reward:

With the classic offer, a free product is given only if the minimum amount is reached for that specific product.

The Buy X Get Y reward lets you give the free product as soon as the order total reaches a certain amount. This makes the offer more attractive to customers while encouraging the sale of several products.

⚠️ For a Buy X Get Y discount to work, the required minimum purchase amount (the "X", what the customer has to buy) must be at least 1.5 times the price of the cheapest item the customer can get free or discounted (the "Y", the reward).

Example:

  • If your reward (Y) is a €10 product

  • The minimum purchase amount (X) must be at least €15 (€10 × 1.5)

The customer gets product Y, or a product from collection Y.

  • Search for your collection or your product

Select, among your products or collections, the one you want to give away as part of the Buy X Get Y reward. You can now apply the reward to an entire collection, which lets you offer several products from the same collection as gifts.

All variants of the selected product are eligible by default. You can restrict the selection to specific ones.

  • With a reduced value

Choose the type of discount you want to offer your customers:

Percentage: the customer gets a percentage discount on product Y.

Product amount: a fixed-amount discount is applied to product Y.
Example: you take €5 off the product price.

Free: product Y is given away with the purchase of product X.

💡 Multi-currency: with Free, product Y is given away in every one of your currencies. The discount is 100% of the product's value rather than a fixed amount — so there is nothing to set up market by market.

Example: you sell the same accessory at €35 in France and £32 in the UK. With a fixed €35 amount, your UK customers were under-discounted. With Free, the product is fully covered in both markets.

  • Points
The number of points your users need in order to redeem this reward.

  • Description
You can add usage tips and product details.

  • Expiration Date
The date from which the reward can no longer be used. It can be sliding or fixed.

  • Combination

Offer to combine rewards with a discount on the product, on the order, or on shipping fees.

  • Apply to a list of users

You can link your reward to lists or VIP tiers.

How the discount is applied

The reward is applied through a discount code. Targeting works at product level: any eligible variant in the cart is discounted. If several eligible variants are in the cart, only the cheapest one is free.

⚠️ Product Y is not added to the cart automatically. The customer has to add it themselves for the discount to apply. Make this clear in your reward description.

Activating the reward

Finally, you can save the reward as a draft or publish it, and it will then be visible to users.

Well done, you now know how to create and edit your Buy X Get Y reward. 🌟
