How does Loyoly's OCR (receipt scanning) work?
The Scan a receipt mission lets your customers earn points by scanning their receipt for purchases made in store (pharmacy, supermarket, resellers, specialty retail). This lets you reward your customers' entire purchase journey, beyond e-commerce alone.
In practice, when a customer submits a receipt, Loyoly first runs a series of automatic checks to filter out non-compliant receipts, then the valid receipts are sent to you for moderation in your Back Office for final validation.
💡 OCR is a feature you need to unlock: it is not included by default in merchant plans. Its price depends on the number of receipts submitted and validated by your moderation team.
Setting up the "Scan a receipt" mission
The mission is configured from the Missions section of your Back Office. The mission page has two tabs: Configuration and Advanced settings.
Configuration tab — the basic fields
Mission title — the title shown to the customer (e.g. "Scan a receipt"). A language selector lets you translate it.
Description — the text that guides the customer in completing the mission.
Points attribution
The Points Attribution field is set to Automatic: the number of points awarded depends on the loyalty mission you have configured. For example, if your program is set to 1 € = 1 point, the customer receives as many points as the euro amount on their receipt.
💡 You can always add extra points to a customer during moderation, if you wish.
Maximum receipt age
The Maximum ticket validity period for submission (days) field defines the maximum age accepted for a receipt. For example, set to 14, any receipt dated more than 14 days ago is automatically rejected, with no action needed on your part.
You can also set the Number of times the mission can be done — how many times a customer can complete the mission, using the preset values (1, 3, 5, unlimited) or a custom value. A maximum of 3 submissions per day per customer applies.
Advanced settings tab — customization
Icon — the mission icon: default, custom icon (90×90) or custom image.
How it works — the steps shown to the customer to help them complete the mission.
Targeting — the mission's audience (open to all or targeted).
💡 Remember to click Save at the top right to publish the mission.
A receipt's journey, step by step
The customer scans their receipt — from their loyalty space, via the "Scan a receipt" mission.
Automatic checks by the OCR — Loyoly automatically rejects receipts that do not meet the minimum requirements.
Moderation in the Back Office — valid receipts arrive in the Moderation section of your Loyoly Back Office, where you check their compliance and validate or reject them. The products detected and validated by the merchant will be visible; the others will be blurred.
Points attribution — once the receipt is validated, the customer receives their points and is notified. The number of points depends on your loyalty mission configuration: for example, if you set 1 € = 1 point and the receipt shows a spend of 100 €, the customer receives 100 points. Points are credited automatically after Loyoly's first validation. You can then add extra points, as you prefer, from the Content -> Moderation section.
What the mission automatically rejects thanks to Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
Even before reaching your moderation, Loyoly automatically filters out unusable receipts. The following are automatically rejected:
Receipts that are too old — receipts whose date exceeds the maximum age set in the Maximum ticket validity period for submission (days) field. A receipt older than this limit is refused without any action on your part.
Empty receipts — unreadable receipts or those containing no usable information are automatically discarded.
Duplicate receipts — when a customer submits two similar receipts.
💡 This automatic filtering saves you time: you only receive recent, usable receipts in moderation.
Moderating receipts in the Back Office
Once non-compliant receipts have been filtered out, the remaining receipts are sent to you in the Moderation section of your Loyoly Back Office. It is up to you to check the compliance of each receipt and decide its outcome:
Validate the receipt — the customer then receives their points. You can also add extra points at this stage if you wish.
Reject the receipt.
⚠️ Final validation always remains human: the OCR only filters out non-compliant receipts (too old or empty), but it is you who confirms compliance and validates the points attribution.
